las vegas: flamingo hotel
the uncle of mine who has always planned our vacations to las vegas is also an avid poker player. in vegas, when you start to win, hotels take notice and start throwing crazy offers for free rooms and meals your way. my unce always played at the flamingo, and thus, we always stayed at the flamingo.

the wynn and encore hotels, developed by famous las vegas hotelier steve wynn (narcissism, much?) are a little different from other strip hotels in that they don’t have an obvious theme- they’re meant to draw people in. from the outside, they’re just huge, gold building complex. impressive, but nevertheless, nondescript.

one of the most impressive and beautiful hotels in the world (and actually the largest as well) is the venetian hotel complex. it’s quite elegantly themed around venice, italy.

it’s a great thing we had a car because i totally underestimated a taxi fare to downtown vegas (about a $50 round trip). i wanted to see downtown again since i hadn’t gone in years. it’s a seedy little place, really only for hardcore gamblers, but it’s got a lot of history there i can appreciate.

after waking on the third day, jeremy and i ventured out to the pool complex. honestly, swimming was one of the main considerations in planning a vacation, and having been to the mgm grand a couple years ago, i knew we’d be covered. five pools, three hot tubs, and a lazy river kept us cool when we needed out of the sun.

jeremy and i walked next door (vegas has walkways over most major streets so pedestrian/auto traffic rarely collide. in fact, the whole transportation infrastructure there [parking, roads, moving sidewalks, etc] is pretty efficient.) to caesar’s palace, one of the most famous hotels in vegas.
it’s one of three hotels i can think of, and the first of those, to have a sky ceiling...

the next morning, jer and i took a walk to bellagio, a gorgeous hotel that my dad still likes to tease me about being denied access to when i was a teenager (you have to be an adult to enter untila guest of the hotel) (elitish d-dags).

the mgm grand was, for most of my life, the largest hotel in the world (it’s now second). it used to have roller coasters and a wizard of oz theme that enchanted me as a child. since then, those things have been removed in place of more rooms and more pools and probably more bars, from what it appears.

leaving for las vegas
i despise packing for trips, even ones for which i’m very excited. i show my disdain by refusing to pack until the final 10 minutes (which usually gets extended by 5-10 minutes anyway). even so, jeremy and i were driven carefully (in an electrifying thunderstorm) to the new indianapolis airport on saturday, march 28.
i love airports but hate flying because of all the hassles and mistakes...
